It was started about 25 years ago. People used to gather at one of member's house weekly. In 1989 due to the efforts of Mr. Ajit Chitre, the Mandal got registered with the ministry and also rented a premises in Gudaibiya-Manama. Mr.Ajit Chitre was the first president of Maharashtra Cultural Society, (MCS). Since then the Mandal has come a long way and now it has a membership of more that 300 members that includes many Non Maharashtrians.

The facilities include a Library housing more than 300 books. Well equipped Gymnasium, Table Tennis, Carom etc.

The society organizes numerous events such as Dramas, Variety Entertainment Programs, Sports and Cultural Competitions, Annual Publication of 'Salaam Bahrain' and so on. The most important religious event is the Ganesh Utsav. It is organised every year by the society at the temple in Manama Souq and more than 3000 people visit the temple during 2 days of Utsav.

The executive committee for the society changes every year and is selected during the Annual General Meeting of the members in January.
